Called Striae in Dermatology.

EPIDEMIOLOGY INCIDENCE:

  • Very common condition
  • Usually develops between ages 5 and 50
  • More common in Caucasians
  • Twice as frequent in women as in men

STRETCH MARKS CAN FORM AS A RESULT OF:

  • Pregnancy
  • Puberty
  • Weight gain / body building
  • Cushing’s disease (body produces excess cortisol)
  • Marfan’s syndrome (faulty gene that affects connective tissue, including skin. Weakens body tissues and affects ability to stretch)
  • Overuse of cortisone skin creams
